#ChickLitMay Book Boyfriend Blog Hop - ARLEN BLACK

Chick Lit Book Boyfriend 2017 candidate:

ARLEN BLACK

the hero of Queen of the Universe by Geralyn Corcillo

From the "I'm Trying to Stay Sane" journal of Arlen Black
Why does he need to stay sane, you ask?

From Arlen's journal: Ray said I should do this, keep a journal. That it helps take off the pressure. The show, the media, my crazy-as-a-duck co-star. But the thing is, nothing about playing this part stresses me out. Are you kidding? After everything I've lost ... the kids ...  saying a few lines on camera isn't about to faze me.

Lola is the one driving me nuts, plain and simple. I said I'd be on her show - and I don't regret it. She all but tricked me into it, but to say no would have been to crush her dreams. And I couldn't do it. I WOULDN'T. I wasn't about to let someone else feel  that kind of screeching pain - not when I could stop it.

So no, I don't regret it. But why did she let me get so close to her?
And why did she get so close to me? She says she thought it was all her and she had no idea I was feeling the attraction, too. Seriously? After that kiss on the very first day ... and on her patio? Man, it's a good thing I walked out - well, stormed out - when I did.

But I came back. Just to do the show. Nothing else. Because now I know that Lola is a liar and a manipulator and ... God, why can't I stop thinking about her? And why does it keep happening? Every time I'm near her, she makes me feel ... God! Even knowing what I know about her - even after everything I lost ... Damn it!

She makes me feel alive again.

    1. You know, my cover designer Sue Traynor went back and forth on that belt a lot to get it just so :) And yes, Lola for shizzle rattles Arlen's cage. And Arlen makes her think twice about how in control everything she really is :)

  3. Love this! Especially what this reveals about his character: "She all but tricked me into it, but to say no would have been to crush her dreams. And I couldn't do it. I WOULDN'T. I wasn't about to let someone else feel that kind of screeching pain - not when I could stop it." I think these 3 sentences alone make Arlen the ultimate book boyfriend! :)

    1. Aw, thanks! You know, when I was writing this book, and talking to my husband about it - he is a TV writer who knows story better than anyone I've ever met - he said that this was the part of the book I had to nail - Arlen's decision to help her. I had to make it work, make it convincing, and make it so that the very essence of who Arlen is HAD to say yes :)

    1. Oh, what a nice thing to say :) Thank you. You know, that whole book started for me with the character Arlen and his story. Lola, who is the Queen, actually came into being after Arlen. :)

    1. Aw, thanks Holly! You know, after I wrote Miss Adventure, I couldn't get Jack and Lisa out of my head. But then one day, I thought of Arlen- the idea of him just came to me - and Queen of the Universe burst into life.

    1. You know, I think about my characters, like, all the time. Them in the books, them before the story takes place, and mostly, them in their lives after the books. And I think about Lola and Arlen more than anyone else :) I hope you enjoy it when you read it!

    1. Hi Karen! All I can say is ... Lola is worth any trouble she causes ... and the way she fixes her mistakes is even more spectacular than how she makes them in the first place :)

    1. Hi Beth, OMG that is too funny! You know, I've never encountered anyone named Arlen (except for the senator from Pennsylvania, but I didn't name Arlen after him for sure) It's weird - I usually spend some time sussing out just the right names for my characters, but the name Arlen Black just popped into my head.
